A Vedic birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon, planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood against the fixed stars at the moment you were born. It is measured on the sidereal zodiac, which in 2026 sits about 24° behind the Western one, so most people find their Sun, Moon and rising signs move back one sign.

What a Vedic chart shows you

Western astrology usually starts with your Sun sign. Vedic astrology starts with the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, and with the Moon. Here is what each part of the results means.

Rising sign (lagna)

The lagna is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It becomes your first house, the starting point for everything else in the chart. It describes how you meet the world: your body, temperament and first instincts. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, and the rising degree moves about 1° every four minutes. That is why two people born on the same day in the same city can have very different charts.

Moon sign (rashi)

In Vedic astrology the Moon sign is often read before the Sun sign. It describes your mind, your moods and what you need to feel settled. Saturn's well-known Sade Sati transit is counted from it.

Birth nakshatra

The zodiac is also split into 27 smaller star groups called nakshatras, each 13°20′ wide. The one holding your Moon is your janma nakshatra, or birth star. It adds detail that the twelve signs can't: two people with a Taurus Moon can have quite different natures if one Moon sits in Krittika and the other in Rohini. Our nakshatra calculator explains your birth star and its pada in more depth.

Sun sign, and why it may have changed

The result shows your sidereal Sun sign next to your Western one. Born July 4? Western astrology says Cancer, but on that date the sidereal Sun is around 19° Gemini. Born August 20? You are a Leo in both systems, because the Sun had already moved far enough into the sign. Our guide on why your sign is different in Vedic astrology walks through the reason.

Houses

AstroCall uses whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the whole first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on around the wheel. If your lagna is Virgo, then Libra is your second house, Scorpio your third, and a planet anywhere in Scorpio sits in your third house. Each house covers an area of life, such as the 4th for home, the 7th for partnership and the 10th for work and reputation. The house column in the planet table tells you where each planet does its work.

Planet table

The last section lists the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu with their sidereal sign and degree, house and nakshatra. An "(R)" means the planet appeared to move backward (retrograde) when you were born. Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's; they are always exactly opposite each other, and AstroCall uses their mean positions.

Dashas: the timing layer

The part most people come back for is the dasha list. Vedic astrology divides life into planetary periods using the Vimshottari system, a 120-year cycle whose starting point is set by your Moon's nakshatra. The tool shows the mahadasha you are in now, the sub-period (antardasha) inside it, and every major period with start and end dates. Read it as which planet's themes are in the foreground right now. The mahadasha calculator explains each period.

Atmakaraka and Sade Sati

You will also see your atmakaraka, the planet at the highest degree within its sign, often read as the main thread of your life, and whether Saturn is currently making its Sade Sati pass over your Moon sign.

Why your birth time matters

Your birth date gives the planets' signs. Your birth time gives everything that depends on the turning of the Earth: the lagna, the houses and the exact Moon degree. The Moon moves about 13° a day, roughly half a degree an hour, so even a one-hour error shifts it noticeably. That changes when each dasha begins and ends, and if the Moon was near the edge of a nakshatra, it can change your birth star.

The time on a US birth certificate is usually close enough. If you don't know your time, tick the box: the tool uses noon, leaves the rising sign blank, and lets your Moon sign stand in as the first house. Signs for slow planets like Jupiter and Saturn will still be right, but treat the Moon's nakshatra and the dasha dates as approximate.

How the chart is calculated

Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris. The sidereal zodiac uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the setting most Indian astrologers and official Indian calendars use. Your birthplace sets the latitude, longitude and time zone, including daylight saving time where it applied.

Questions people ask

Is this Vedic birth chart calculator really free?

Yes. The calculator is free, needs no account and doesn't store your birth details: the chart is worked out when you press the button and is gone when you leave the page. AstroCall's only paid product is phone time with Tara, its AI Vedic astrologer, for people who want their chart read and their questions answered out loud.

What is the difference between a Vedic and a Western birth chart?

A Vedic chart is measured against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac), while a Western chart is measured from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac). The two are now about 24° apart, so most placements move back a sign. Vedic astrology also leans on the Moon, the rising sign and the 27 nakshatras, and times life events with planetary periods called dashas.

Can I get a Vedic chart without my birth time?

Yes. Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the tool calculates for noon. You will get reliable signs for the Sun and the slower planets, a Moon sign that is right in most cases, and dasha dates that may be off by months. The rising sign and houses need a birth time, so the tool reads your chart from the Moon instead.

What is my lagna in Vedic astrology?

Your lagna is your rising sign: the sidereal sign on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It becomes the first house of your chart and shapes how you come across and approach life. It changes about every two hours, so you need an accurate birth time to find it. Enter your details above and it appears first in the results.

Which ayanamsa does this calculator use?

It uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the most widely used setting in Vedic astrology. It puts the sidereal zodiac about 24°14′ behind the tropical zodiac in 2026. Other ayanamsas differ from Lahiri by around a degree, which only matters if a planet sits very close to the edge of a sign or nakshatra.

Is a Vedic birth chart reading accurate?

The calculation is precise: the positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris and are correct to well under a degree for any date this tool accepts. What a placement means is interpretation, built on tradition rather than proven science. Treat a reading as a lens for reflecting on your life, not as a prediction about health, money or legal matters.
