Moon Sign Calculator: Find Your Vedic Rashi
Find your Moon sign, or rashi, the sign Vedic astrology reads first for your mind and moods, along with your Moon's nakshatra and pada.
Your Vedic Moon sign (rashi) is the sidereal sign the Moon was in when you were born. Vedic astrology reads it for your mind, your moods and what you need to feel settled, and daily horoscopes are counted from it. The Moon changes sign every two to two and a half days, so your birth date usually settles it, but enter your time and place below to be sure.

Why Vedic astrology centers the Moon sign
Ask someone raised with Vedic astrology for their sign and they will usually give you their Moon sign. The word rashi on its own often means exactly that. The Moon is read as the mind: how you feel, react and settle down. It is also the most personal marker in the chart. Millions of people share your Sun sign for a month at a time; the Moon changes sign every couple of days.
The Moon sign does practical work, too. Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year Sade Sati is measured from it, and when the birth time is unknown, it stands in for the rising sign as the first house.
Using your Moon sign for horoscopes
Vedic daily horoscopes count the houses from your Moon sign and read where the planets are passing today. Once you know your rashi, go to its page: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces, or start from the horoscope page. If you've been reading horoscopes by your Western Sun sign, the Moon-sign version may feel quite different, and that's expected.
Does your birth time matter?
Usually not, sometimes a lot. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so on most birthdays it stays in one sign all day and the date alone gives the right answer. On the day it changes sign, the time decides it.
Your birthplace matters for the same reason: it sets your time zone, and 11 p.m. in California is already the next morning in India. The calculator handles that. If you don't know your time, it uses noon. Then check the Moon's degree in the planet table: within about 7° of the start or end of the sign, the neighboring sign is possible, so read both.
Your Moon's nakshatra
Each sign holds two and a quarter nakshatras, star groups 13°20′ wide. The one holding your Moon is your birth star, and it adds detail the sign can't: a Gemini Moon in Ardra tends toward storms and breakthroughs, one in Punarvasu toward renewal and coming home. The results show your nakshatra and pada under your Moon sign. Its ruling planet also sets which period your mahadasha sequence starts with. The nakshatra calculator goes deeper.
What each Moon sign needs
One way to read your rashi is to ask what helps your mind settle. These are tendencies; planets with the Moon and its house change the picture.
| Moon sign | Rashi | Feels settled with |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mesha | A problem to tackle, room to vent and move on |
| Taurus | Vrishabha | Comfort, routine, things that last |
| Gemini | Mithuna | Conversation, variety, someone to think out loud with |
| Cancer | Karka | Home, family, caring and being cared for |
| Leo | Simha | Warmth, appreciation, being taken seriously |
| Virgo | Kanya | Order, usefulness, a plan that works |
| Libra | Tula | Harmony, fairness, a calm partnership |
| Scorpio | Vrishchika | Trust, privacy, depth over small talk |
| Sagittarius | Dhanu | Freedom, meaning, something to look forward to |
| Capricorn | Makara | Structure, steady progress, respect earned |

Questions people ask
What is my Moon sign?
Your Moon sign is the sign of the sidereal zodiac the Moon occupied at your birth. Enter your birth date, time and place above and the calculator shows it, with its Sanskrit name, nakshatra and pada. If you don't know your birth time, it uses noon, which gives the right Moon sign on most birthdays but not all.
What is a rashi?
Rashi is the Sanskrit word for a zodiac sign. In everyday use, "my rashi" usually means your Moon sign, because Vedic astrology reads the Moon first for the mind and emotions. The twelve rashis are Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, matching Aries through Pisces.
Is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western one?
Often, yes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which in 2026 sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. If your Western Moon is in roughly the first 24° of its sign, your Vedic Moon is in the sign before it. Why your sign is different explains the shift.
Should I read my horoscope by Moon sign or Sun sign?
In Vedic astrology, by Moon sign. Vedic horoscopes count houses from the Moon and read how today's planets pass through them, so a horoscope for your Sun sign would start from the wrong place. Western horoscopes use the Sun sign on the tropical zodiac. Both are interpretations, so follow the system you prefer.
