Lagna Calculator: Your Vedic Rising Sign
Find your lagna, the sidereal sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, with its nakshatra and ruling planet.
Your lagna, or Vedic rising sign, is the sidereal sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It becomes the first house of your chart and sets every other house, so it shapes the whole reading. Because the lagna changes about every two hours, you need your birth time to find it.

What the lagna is
As the Earth turns, the twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon one after another. The sign rising when you took your first breath is your lagna, or ascendant. Vedic astrology treats it as the starting point of the chart: your body, temperament and the way you meet the world.
Vedic astrology leads with the lagna and the Moon, not the Sun. Your Vedic lagna is often the sign before your Western rising sign, because the sidereal zodiac sits about 24° behind the tropical one; see why your sign is different in Vedic astrology.
Why your birth time matters
All twelve signs rise in about 24 hours, roughly two hours each, though depending on the sign and your latitude it can be well under two or closer to three. The rising degree moves about one degree every four minutes.
So a time that's off by half an hour can change your lagna if you were born near a changeover. If you're unsure of your time, run the calculator again 20 or 30 minutes earlier and later. If the sign holds, rely on it; if it flips, read both. Without a birth time, the tool reads your chart from your Moon sign instead.
Your lagna lord
The planet that rules your rising sign is your lagna lord, or chart ruler. Find it in the planet table and note its house. A Virgo rising with Mercury in the 10th tends to pour itself into work and reputation; with Mercury in the 4th, the same person may center life on home and family.
How the lagna sets your houses
AstroCall uses whole-sign houses. Your rising sign is the whole first house, the next sign the second, and so on. For a Scorpio rising, Sagittarius is the 2nd house, Taurus the 7th (partnership) and Leo the 10th (career). Any planet in Taurus sits in the 7th.
That's why the same planet means different things for two people born on the same day: Jupiter in Cancer is the 1st house for a Cancer rising and the 10th for a Libra rising. The Vedic birth chart page covers what each house means.
Your lagna nakshatra
The rising degree also falls in one of the 27 nakshatras, shown under your rising sign in the results. It adds detail about your outward nature, as the Moon's nakshatra does for your inner life. A Leo rising in Magha reads as regal; one in Uttara Phalguni as steady and generous. For your Moon's birth star, use the nakshatra calculator.

Questions people ask
What is my lagna?
Your lagna is your Vedic rising sign: the sidereal sign on the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. Enter your birth date, time and place above and it appears first in your results, with its nakshatra underneath. Every house in your chart is counted from it.
Is lagna the same as the ascendant?
Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit term for the ascendant. The difference from a Western ascendant is the zodiac: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical one, so your Vedic lagna is often the sign before your Western rising sign. If your Western ascendant is late in its sign, both can match.
Can I find my lagna without a birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a date alone leaves up to twelve possibilities. Without a time, the calculator uses your Moon sign as the first house, a fallback called Chandra lagna. If you know roughly when you were born, try both ends of that window and see if the sign holds.
Which is more important, lagna or Moon sign?
Both, for different reasons. The lagna sets the houses and describes your body, temperament and outward path. The Moon sign describes your mind and emotional life, and is used for daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and dasha timing. Many Vedic astrologers read the chart from both and compare what each shows.
